5 Most Popular Izakayas in Japan - Experience the Japanese Night Culture!

Have you been to izakaya in Japan? It is a Japanese style casual bar where you can enjoy reasonably priced Japanese dishes, drinks, and nomihodai (all-you-can-drink). Izakaya is such common that there are many chains located near stations. Here is a list of the selected izakaya chains which feature different food and concepts. Check all and find the one that meets your need!

Uotami (魚民)

Uotami is the biggest izakaya chain in Japan with having as many as 700 branches located throughout the country. You can easily access as many of them are located very close to the stations.

Their menu is extensive and reasonably priced. You can try many typical Japanese izakaya food which is considered to go well with sake, beer, and other drinks. The all-you-can-drink plan is popular too because they offer a nice selection of drink menu. You can drink various kinds of alcohol (also soft drinks available) by charging only 1000-1500 yen (varies in each shop)!

Torikizoku (鳥貴族)

Torikizoku is well known for setting every menu at as cheap as 280 yen, including drinks! They have over 500 locations and you can easily find by looking for the yellow signboard.

The 280 yen drink menu includes beer, whiskey, wine, sake, and cocktails. Their food menu is mainly yakitori (Japanese traditional grilled chicken on sticks), this is one reason why Torikizoku attracts foreign visitors. You can try a Japanese traditional dish while drinking without concerning money. They have various kinds of juicy yakitori and you can choose from three seasonings, salt, spices, and tare (sweet and savory sauce).

Isomaru Suisan (磯丸水産)

Isomaru Suisan is a unique izakaya located all across the country, especially in Tokyo area. What is special about it is you grill the seafood on the table by yourself. The atmosphere is very lively and you can have an exciting dining.

Their seafood, such as shrimp and scallops, is amazingly fresh. The flavors are enhanced by grilling. They also have fresh raw seafood like sushi and kaisen don (raw seafood rice bowl). The great thing is they are not expensive compared to other seafood restaurants and pubs. The drink menu is affordable too. If you are a seafood lover, you need to try Isomaru Suisan!

Kin no Kura (金の蔵)

Kin no Kura is another famous low-cost chain izakaya. They offer an extensive menu from Japanese to Western, many of the food and drinks are priced under 500 yen.

What is great about this izakaya is you can order with the touch screen on the table. The menu is also written in English, it's such a foreigner-friendly and convenient system. Along with the cheap dishes, they offer all-you-can-eat plan starting from 2800 yen and it includes all-you-can-drink!

Watami (和民)

Watami has a wide variety of Japanese dishes. You might have heard of that because they have branches abroad. There are more than 300 shops in Japan.

Although cheap izakaya chains tend to be lively and noisy, they have more calming and relaxing atmosphere. The interior decoration and food presentation are great too. You can have a nice time with your friends, family, or boy/girl friend while admiring delicious dishes like fresh sushi and crispy karaage (Japanese deep fried chicken).
