Nozawa Onsen Fire festival, Dousojin Matsuri


Every January 15th, a Fire festival called Dousojin Matsuri is held in Nozawa Onsen, in the northern part of Nagano prefecture. Well known as one of the three major fire festivals of Japan, the powerful and beautiful fire with the atmosphere of the festival will surely overwhelm you.

Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen is a small village located in northern part of Nagano prefecture, famous for hot springs and its beautiful traditional buildings. Surrounded by mountains and beautiful nature, Nozawa Onsen is surely one of the tourist sites you can't miss in Japan.

Dousojin Matsuri (道祖神祭り)Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival

Dousojin Matsuri,(道祖神祭り) Nozawa Onsen fire festival is held on every January 15th of the year.

Dondo yaki (どんど焼き), an event which you burn up new year ornaments has been held in many places around Japan. The origin of the event even goes back to the Heian era. Dousojin(道祖神), is known as a god which saves the place from disasters and well known and worshipped around Japan. Among the other Dondoyaki festivals, Nozawa Onsen fire festival is one of the biggest festivals and counted as one of the three major fire festivals in Japan.

The main purpose of this festival is to wish for a good harvest, health, and fortune. The whole festival is pretty long and sometimes it can last for 4 hours.
