When you travel to Hiroshima, a must-try food is the local okonomiyaki. Although okonomiyaki restaurants are found everywhere in Japan, Hiroshima has its own local style that uses noodles and layers the ingredients.
If you're in Japan, you should definitely try ramen, and if you're a ramen fanatic, you should try ramen in each prefecture you visit, as each has its unique take on the national dish. Have you ever tried the Hiroshima ramen dish? The particularity is that it is a soy sauce broth with chicken broth and local seafood broth as well. It has a rich and deep taste.
More than ramen, tsukemen is particularly famous in Hiroshima. You can for example have soupless tantan ramen (a Chinese-style spicy ramen).
Hiroshima is one of the four regions in Japan famous for growing delicious oysters. They are known to be small, but incredibly meaty and tasty. If you are an oyster lover, you definitely have to try oysters in Hiroshima! Let it be at a Japanese or Western restaurant, there are so many ways to enjoy oysters. For example, at a Japanese seafood BBQ, an Okonomiyaki, Italian, oyster bar or a Japanese-style restaurant.
Miyajima's famous local food is "anago-meshi" which is broiled conger eel on a bed of rice. And it is made with the freshest fish as "anago" can be found in abundance in the waters surrounding Miyajima islands.
Hiroshima is home to 50 sake breweries, and one of Japan's top three sake producing areas, including Kyoto and Kobe. What gave Hiroshima its unique edge is their technology improvement and the use of soft water, rather than hard water. You can taste Hiroshima's rich nature in the sake.
