7 Awesome Places for Osaka's Soul Food, Okonomiyaki, in Osaka

Osaka City

If you are wondering what to eat in Osaka, try Okonomiyaki, one of the Osaka's soul food. Okonomiyaki is a savory pan-fried cake, and it is great to eat with your family and your friends!

Feel free to follow favy!

Just a 5-minute walk from Namba station, Fukutaro is a very famous okonomiyaki place in the southern part of Osaka. Due to its popularity, you might have to wait for quite a long time - but let me tell you, it is definitely worth the wait. So don't give up and go home, stay and enjoy what Fukutaro has to offer!
Their recommended menu item is Negi-yaki (thinner than okonomiyaki, made with green onion)!

Yukari (ゆかり)

Looking for a refined, traditional Okonomiyaki experience? This is it. They also have cheese okonomiyaki called Fromage yaki! If you are unsure of how to cook okonomiyaki, you can ask the staff there and they will make one for you. Located around a few minutes walk from Higashi Umeda station.

Okaru (おかる)

If you are looking for a fun Okonomiyaki experience - Okaru is the place. Just a 4 minute walk from Nihonbashi station, close to Hozenji Temple, they are famous for their service - mayonnaise art! You can ask what you want them to draw, and boom!

Hana (花)

Featured on Bib Gourmand Osaka 2016, this place serves square-shaped okonomiyaki. They only have a counter table, and no teppan (iron plate). All of their food is around ¥999~2,999, which is very reasonable! Located less than a 10-minute walk from Kyobashi station.

Kiji Main Branch きじ 本店

This is the original location of the super popular restaurant called Kiji. You might have to wait up to one hour to get inside at peak hours, and unfortunately, you cannot make a reservation to avoid the wait. It is well worth it, however. You will love the retro atmosphere of the restaurant and their killer okonomiyaki!

The particularity of their okonomiyaki is that they use a generous amount of beefsteak plant as a topping, which gives it a fresh taste.

Ajinoya Main Branch 味乃家 本店

The okonomiyaki served here is just as tantalizing as the yakisoba, so have both if you go. A popular choice is the super hearty Ajinoya Okonomiyaki Mix (¥1,300) which has squid, shrimps, octopus, pork, minced meat, and two eggs in it. They have the yakisoba equivalent of that one, with the same ingredients too, and for the same price.

Jibundoki (時分時)

Jibundoki is a relatively high-end teppanyaki restaurant that specializes the typical things (okonomiyaki, yakisoba, steak) that can be cooked on the large iron plate (the "teppan"). Their wagyu steak cooked teppan style is amazing, and so is their okonomiyaki! What is a bit surprising about this place is that they serve a really fancy kind of okonomiyaki! This is a bit of a contradiction because okonomiyaki is seen as, in essence, a pretty cheap street food.

At any rate, it's amazing! The restaurant has won many awards so you should definitely go there for an up-scale okonomiyaki experience. People report paying around ¥8,000 for a dinner meal. Make sure to try their other excellent teppanyaki dishes too.

Located a 6-minute walk from Honmachi station. The restaurant is really popular so it might be a good idea to make a reservation to save you time.
