5 Places For Cheap Regional Sushi In Nara

Nara City

Nara has its own traditional type of sushi, which is similar to nigiri sushi but wrapped in a leaf. Make sure to try it while you are there. It's cheap too!

Feel free to follow favy!

Kakinohasushi Tanaka 柿の葉すし本舗たなか

This sushi wrapped in a persimmon tree leaf is a regional specialty. Tanaka is well-known in Nara for its quality. The sushi is really simple, so the quality of the ingredients is very important. Tanaka uses fish with a particularly high-fat content. You can buy a bento box or you can eat inside the restaurant/souvenir shop. A 7-piece box is around ¥1,000.
Located near the Kintetsu Nara Station (Exit 3).

Izasa Nakatani Hompo ゐざさ中谷本舗 近鉄奈良店

Nakatani Hompo is another famous place that sells the regional sushi wrapped in a leaf. They have shrimp, salmon and mackerel (the most popular and representative of this sushi style) among other types. This is an ideal type of sushi to bring for a picnic. You can eat them directly from the leaf without using chopsticks.
This shop is really near the Kintetsu Nara Station (on a basement floor).

Izasa ゐざさ 三条店

Note that Izasa (shop just previously introduced) also has another branch near the station. Since it is one of the best for regional sushi, we decided to include this one as well. There is the standard menu but also some seasonal specials such as this sakura sushi!

Hiraso 平宗

Hiraso is also a shop of long standing you can't go wrong with and is also a shop where you can have your bento for takeout only. Prices for their boxes of 8 pieces are between ¥1,200 and ¥2,000.

Kakinohasushi Hompo Tanaka 柿の葉すし本舗たなか奈良ショップ

This is another branch of the Kakinoha Sushi Tanaka, only this one is take-out only. Grab a bento then and head to the parks of Nara to enjoy this local delicacy while watching the deer!
