Must-Eat Food in Kobe! (There's Not Only Kobe Beef)


The number one most popular Japanese food is undoubtedly Kobe beef, and is so for a reason! It's so incredibly delicious and tender, it's nothing like you've ever had before. However, there is so much to discover in Kobe. Here is some must-try Kobe cuisine!

Kobe Beef (神戸牛)

It would be a shame to go all the way to Kobe without trying the worldwide famous Kobe beef. Its particularity is that it's extremely tender and beautifully marbled. Kobe beef is made from purebred Tajima cattle, and once the meat is slaughtered, it again has to pass strict requirements to be labelled Kobe beef. Its exclusiveness makes it so pricey.

If you're in Kobe, you might as well enjoy la creme de la creme in terms of quality. Kobe beef is usually served as steak or teppanyaki (grilled on an iron plate), however, there are a surprising number of ways to have it. Chinese Cuisine (中華)

Another aspect Kobe is famous for is its Chinatown, Nankinmachi. It has so many delicious and popular restaurants, such as ones that sell pork-steamed buns or fried dumplings. It's definitely worth the detour. Akashiyaki (明石焼き)

Everyone knows Osaka's soul food, takoyaki, which, simply put is batter with an octopus in the centre. Akashiyaki is said to be the antecedent to takoyaki.

Akashiyaki is an egg-heavy batter made with octopus in the centre, it is also cooked on the takoyaki grill. The ball is then cooked in a dashi broth. It is much softer than takoyaki.

Ramen (ラーメン)

This one might seem a little obvious since ramen is famous throughout Japan, not specifically in Kobe. However, the beauty of Japanese cuisine is that each region has its adaptation which gives you the opportunity to discover so many variations.

One of the many reasons it's so good is the fact there is a Chinatown, so Chinese-style ramen is simply delish. But salt, soy-sauce and pork-based ramen are also really good.

Ikanago (いかなご)

Inago is sand eel which is boiled down in soy sauce and has a slightly sweet taste. It is served as a side dish or over rice.
Sand eels are those tiny fish you can spot sticking their heads out of the sand in the sea.
It's probably those make or break type of dish, but to be fair, you should at least try it even if appearance-wise it doesn't tickle your fancy.

Croquette (コッロケ)

Croquettes, as you may have guessed from the name, is a French dish, but has been adapted to Japanese taste and is now integrated as a Japanese staple dish.
Kobe croquettes are said to be particularly good, they are some nationwide croquette shops which have originated from Kobe.

Gyoza (餃子)
