Miyota in Omotesando (Tokyo) Serves A Popular Set: Soba & Donburi


Only 2 minutes from Omotesando Station, you will find a soba restaurant which seems to have suddenly appeared 3 years ago. Since its opening Miyota has been going strong; there is a line-up at any hour of the day. What seems to be their secret? We went to check it out for ourselves!

A slightly high-end eating-while-standing soba restaurant

Miyota is a beautiful and clean restaurant where you can easily walk-in without feeling intimidated. You will see a lot of people coming to eat here on their own, especially women. It's a slightly upscale restaurant for the genre.

On the menu, it says that they are particular about the ingredients they use, such as the buckwheat, the fish sauce, the rice, the tempura and the spices. That is to say, they use high-quality ingredients which are prepared with care.

Although there's a line-up, you never have to wait very long!

Some dishes only cost one coin! I'm down with that!
I was waiting in line for only about 20 minutes. Since most people who come here come on their own, the rotation rate is quite high. There are many counter seats so you never have to wait so long.

Also, looking at the menu, I was surprised to see a lot of dishes only cost about one coin (¥500).

A bang for your buck! The popular soba & donburi set are under ¥1,000!

This time, I ordered the most popular menu item, the "katsudon set", which comes with soba & a small katsudon for ¥840.
About 5 minutes after placing my order, I was served a huge portion. I even wondered if I had a mistake with the size. I asked to make sure and I did order the normal size, it's just that the portions are very generous!
For ¥840, you get that much food, I'd say it's quite a good deal!

The portion of soba is 1.5 times bigger than what you would normally have at a regular soba restaurant!
Their soba is very fragrant and tasty because they grind the whole buckwheat grain to make the soba, this also gives it a nice texture.
The soba has a light texture which is nice when you bite it. The soba is delicious on its own with a bit of wasabi, as it brings out the natural sweetness of the soba. Dipping it in the well-balanced "tsuyu" (fish sauce) doesn't overpower the soba's natural taste.

What is considered a regular-sized katsudon is a small size at Miyota!

The katsudon bowl has a 20cm diameter and definitely doesn't look like a small size!
If you order a katsudon at any other restaurant, this is what they would serve you as a regular portion. On top of a bed of rice, there are three thick pieces of deep-fried pork mixed in with eggs and onions.
The thick pieces of pork are juicy and lean, which makes it surprisingly not heavy!
The rice is soaked in a nice dashi taste, which makes you feel like you can eat it infinitely.


Now that's a bang for your buck! That much tasty food for under ¥1,000, I know I'll be back again soon!
The restaurant serves cheap and tasty food, the restaurant is clean and the service is quick! What else can you ask for! Now I know why there's always a line-up.
