5 Best Ueno Unagi Restaurants

Ueno

Unagi (eel) cuisine is somewhat of an eastern Tokyo specialty, so if you're looking for unagi in Ueno, you're in the right area! Here are 5 fabulous restaurants for unagi in Ueno.

Feel free to follow favy!

Izuei Honten

Izuei is a top-notch unagi restaurant that as over 200 years of history. It's arguably the most respected in the area, serving delectable unaju sets (sets where the eel is served in a large lacquered box) in a traditional atmosphere. The courses are between ¥8,640 and ¥21,600 (for the special course by appointment only). You can also get a smaller eel bowl for ¥3,240, which comes with soup and pickled vegetables.

Izuei Umegawatei

This restaurant is run by the same company as the previous restaurant introduced but it's worth mentioning because this branch differs from the Honten in two important ways.

First, the restaurant offers its unagi dishes also as part of some kaiseki bento sets and courses. Kaiseki is a kind of Japanese cuisine that consists of a variety of intricate, beautiful and tasty seasonal small dishes. It's very much worth the try if you want to taste a lot of variety and get a truly traditional Japanese dining experience.

Also, this branch is located within Ueno Park in a building that resembles a traditional Japanese mansion. The setting and decor are also very impressive so that's also something to consider when choosing your unagi restaurant.

Nodaya のだや

This is a popular restaurant that was established over a hundred years ago, during the Meiji Era. The specialty is unagi served hitsumabushi-style (with a broth that you can pour into the unagi bowl) either coated with tare sauce or salted style. The latter is particularly popular at this restaurant. Without the tare, you can taste the natural umami and sweetness of the eel. That's something to try too.

Kameya Issuitei

This is another elegant traditional Japanese restaurant. It's been in operation for over 60 years, serving their reliably delicious and high-end unagi the traditional style in a lacquered box. They have exquisite high-end courses that require reservations that are up to ¥20,000 per person. Otherwise, the more reasonably-priced options are about ¥8,000 per person for dinner.

Unatoto 宇奈とと

Lastly, on the total opposite side of the price spectrum is Unatoto. ¥500 for a bowl of rice with unagi definitely seems outrageously cheap. However, that's really how much the basic unagi don at Unatoto. It's not as large as the other unagi don that you'll find at other restaurants on this list, but it's far from miniature, and has a surprisingly large piece of eel on top of the rice! Unatoto doesn't cut any corners with the preparation, either, grilling the eel over a charcoal flame and imbibing it with a lovely smoky flavor.

Unatoto has a total of 11 locations across Tokyo, any of which offer the incredibly priced unagi don. Check it out if you're trying to save a little money but still want some authentic unagi.
