Ueno

Nothing beats good okonomiyaki in good company in a lively izakaya in Ueno. Here is our selection of the top 5 okonomiyaki izakayas in Ueno.

Feel free to follow favy!

Tsukishia Monja Moheji Ueno 月島もんじゃ もへじ 上野

This is a new okonomiyaki restaurant in Ueno with a classic vibe. It not only serves okonomiyaki, but also monjayaki (a kind of runnier version of okonomiyaki), which is a specialty of Tsukishima near Odaiba in Tokyo.

You can also enjoy a variety of fresh fish side dishes. The restaurant always has a list of recommended seasonal items.

Note that the restaurant requires that you order at least one item per person.

Okonomiyaki Monja Ueno Guriguri お好み焼き もんじゃ 上野 ぐりぐり

This is another okonomiyaki restaurant with lots of variety on the menu. The staff is energetic and kind which contributes to the nice atmosphere of this relatively small restaurant.

They offer original toppings that you don't see anywhere like dry Baby Star Ramen noodles that add a nice crunchy texture to the okonomiyaki! The cocktail menu also has some original options (e.g. a yogurt sake).

Kotekichi こて吉

The thickness of their okonomiyaki is unmatched. They use their own original blend for the dough which makes them much more fluffy than the standard ones. Some people even prefer them to the standard ones so they're worth giving a try if you're already a fan.

Also, the restaurant does all kinds of dishes on the teppan grill, including some really excellent French toast that you might want to have for dessert!

Monjaya もんじゃや

This is a pleasant restaurant that has the atmosphere of a retro Japanese diner.

It's good even though the prices are pretty cheap so you get the bang for your buck if you go there with an appetite. They even have an all-you-can-eat dinner option that is just ¥1,491 for 90-min (must order one drink).

Also, unlike many other okonomiyaki restaurants, it's open from lunchtime. If you go for lunch, the all-you-can-eat course is even cheaper at ¥980.

Ameyokoyaki アメ横焼き

This is a food stall, not a restaurant. So if you just want a quick bite while you explore Ueno, it's a good option.

Ameyokoyaki is in the famous Ameyokocho alley. It's one of the famous stalls of the area so you'll probably see a line in front of it. Its claim to fame is that it serves tasty okonomiyaki cooked rapidly right before your eyes for a price of just ¥200. Many people argue that it's one of the best, most famous street foods of Ameyokocho.
